’Cause We All Love Books

By: Janet Lindenmuth

There’s something magic in cracking the cover on a brand new book—for you Kindle folks make that tapping a finger. Books become our best friends, trusted advisors, time machines and tickets to better places and times. Some of us are so in love with the whole book thing that we actually want to write one. Or, a few. Or, a few hundred.

Enter the Florida Writers Conference.

For a few days in October, we book lovers and would-be writers get to “crack the covers” on our passion for books and crawl inside. We get to learn and talk and share and eat/sleep and drink books with tons of other people who are just like us. Don’t be scared.

Book lovers are good people and it’s really fun to rub shoulders with them. We’re also given the chance to get up close and personal with actual authors, agents, and publishers.

We’ll learn how to write better. Edit better. Sell our little darlings and ourselves better. In seminars and workshops and discussion groups, oh my!

When we have a few minutes to spare, there’s an actual Bookstore at the Conference.

Remember bookstores? This one is special because it’s stocked with books by our very own Florida writers. Some will be signing their books. Some will be hanging out, sharing their own writing journey with anyone who has questions. Many of the Conference presenters and workshop leaders will have their books for sale in the Bookstore. If you attend a workshop that blows the cap off your Bic you can follow it up by purchasing a book by that same presenter! That little Conference Bookstore is one of the biggest benefits to joining our family of book lovers at the FWA. It’s staffed by us, for us. It is literally an outlet for authors, a real place for writers to walk by and actually see their books on a shelf and on display. At least until Barnes & Noble comes calling.
