2017 Unpublished Novella

The Relic: Jerusalem to St. Augustine

Betsy S. Lee

At the 2017 Royal Palm Literary Award Banquet, author Betsy S. Lee won First Place for her unpublished novella, The Relic: Jerusalem to St. Augustine. Each year at the RPLA Banquet, authors experience the joy of earning accolades for all the hard work that is often done in the privacy of the home with little to no recognition. We’re showcasing the best of the best with our First Place winners spotlight. Not only does RPLA recognize extraordinary talent, but we’re giving readers an opportunity to sample excerpts from the winning stories.

The Relic: Jerusalem to St. Augustine is an inspirational historical fiction. Two modern-day Jewish unbelievers find God while searching for a famous relic and gold in the year 1702.

An interview with Betsy:

Q: Where do you get your story ideas?

A: From 74 years of life experiences.

Q: Anything in particular about your award-winning RPLA entry that you would like to share?

A: Thanks to all my fellow FWA members who have helped me achieve the level of craftsmanship that I have attained.

Q: Whom do you credit with inspiring your writing?

A: My husband, K. Ross Lee. He created the original idea for this book.

I will quote his following reasons that inspired him, “The effect of Religion on history has been a lifelong obsession. I combined larger than life-size characters with actual historical events. The book will uncover unrealized truths about today’s society.”

Q: Any tips for new writers?

A: READ—READ—WRITE—WRITE!

Write on things you love, and then learn even more than you already know.

Congratulations to Betsy on her exciting new book and to her husband for inspiring her and supporting her efforts. What would we do without our supportive husbands? I’m proud also to say that Veronica (Ronnie) was my editor for both Nettie’s Dream and Rachel’s Next Chapter. Yea, Betsy and Ronnie!!
