How did these become our most popular blog posts?

If you’re thinking about blogging, or have been and you posts don’t attract much attention, here’s something to think about: Why are these our most popular posts?

It’s not just the subject matter.

You may have gotten here because you’re subscribed to our blog post mailings. Or maybe you were googling about a certain subject and one of our post titles popped up. But in both cases, initially all you see is the post’s title and a snippet of the content.

So then what made you click over to the site? Mostly likely because it seemed like it would answer a question you related to: What do I buy the writer in my life as a gift? How will I know when a piece of  my writing writing is finished?

As writers, we want to be creative. But blog posts titles need to be forthright and practical in order to attract clicks. Many bloggers make their titles too cute or enigmatic to do that effectively.

Our #1 post this year was also or #1 post last year! It answers a question many writers are asking, and the post’s title makes that clear.
